Intro to VJ-ing Workshop
By Nye Blen
If video killed the radio star, then the VJ is killing the DJ. Spinning records live is one thing, but what if you could combine it with creative and vibrant visual material, all constructed in real time? This has a name, and although you may not have seen much of it yet, the Video Jockey is about to have its moment.
While a DJ mixes discs, a VJ mixes video and images, creating improvisational visual stories and experiences. Using collected banks of movie clips and other materials, and processing them through various creative filters, the VJ walks a line between art, club, and stage, opening up new possibilities for creative expression and entertainment.

In this three-day workshop, we will discover the universe of VJing and explore the many ways of expressing this visual poetry. Whether your background is in video, photography, 3D FX, graphic design, painting, or you’re a complete beginner who’s just interested in how these things could possibly be fused together, then this is for you.

Each participant will get a chance to discover the possibilities of VJ art through the use of the Modul8 software. The only knowledge requirement for this workshop is that you can figure your way around a Mac, as the software is designed for that platform only.
And as an added bonus, if you’re happy with the work that you’ve produced over the three days, you’ll have a chance to show it off at the grand opening of our Hariyo Chowk space in Lagankhel on November 24th!

About the Teacher
Video director and light designer, Mathieu Cretté (aka Nye Blen) has worked since 1999 between Europe and West Africa, creating video and live performances. He makes his own videos, sources a vast picture library which he completes and renews for every new project.
Co-founder of the Collective Yeta in Mali, Nye Blen introduces the evenings “Ka Donké Fo Ka Ségé” (dance until you get tired) in Bamako. Within the framework of this collective, he questions the link between scenic practice and visual art (Dance, Music).
